In July 1947, something crashed on a ranch near Roswell, New Mexico. The U.S. Army initially announced it had recovered a “flying disc”, sparking huge public interest. The military quickly retracted that statement, saying it was actually a weather balloon from a research project. That explanation didn’t satisfy everyone, and rumors spread that the wreckage, and possibly alien bodies, had been secretly recovered by the government. This event became one of the most famous UFO conspiracy stories in history.
